Nidhi Nagabhatla, a senior researcher with United Nations University- Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH – The UN Think Tank on Water), Canada and co-lead SWG 5 – ES in Water management – would like to share her work- Multi-functional Wetlands; Pollution Abatement and Other Ecological Services from Natural and Constructed Wetlands -published by Springer as the inaugural book in their new Environmental Contamination Remediation and Management Series. The book presents a comprehensive synthesis to sustainable and wisely utilize Wetlands Ecosystem Services and/as Nature-based Solutions.
Reckoning that wetland ecosystems contribute a variety valuable ecosystem services to benefit the social capital-these ecosystems have gained importance with the improved priority given by the global agenda to nature based solutions – to address pollution, land and water degradation provide resource for local livelihoods and potential for contribution to accomplishing water related sustainable goals and targets. The synthesis presented in the book covering a range of wetlands ecosystems from arctic to tropical mangrove forest aims to provide data, information and knowledge for researchers, planners and resource managers to value the range of ecological services of wetlands. This is perhaps a first of its kind analysis of nature-based solutions application in/for wetlands and offers a wider coverage of case studies and examples of wetlands as/for nature-based solutions (NbS) at different scales, sectors and geographic areas- in addition to making a good business case for nature-based solutions focusing on natural and constructed wetlands. The work also ties closely with the World Water Development Report 2018 focus on NbS- thus furnishing practical contribution to the process and thinking driving policies and strategies of research and development organizations.
