Between October 24-26, 2018 the Forest Research Institute – Bulgarian Academy of Sciences organized international scientific conference “90 years Forest Research Institute, BAS – for the Society and Nature”. Within the jubilee conference special sessions on Ecosystem services, monitoring and interdisciplinary research were held. The presented talks tackled different aspects in the ecosystem services research and the forest ecosystems, as well as some challenges and opportunities for mapping and assessment of forest ecosystems. Students, early career researchers, scientists and professionals from the environmental agencies and institutions attended the session.
The conference “Smart Geography” dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Bulgarian Geographical Society was held from 2 to 4 November in Sofia University. Among the invited honored keynote speakers was Prof. Benjamin Burkhard, who gave a talk on “Mapping ecosystem services: a powerful tool for smart Geography and decision making”. The session Ecosystem services as a tool for smart spatial solutions of human-environmental problems was organized in collaboration with the Bulgarian ESP NN. Researcher from different disciplines discussed techniques for spatial modelling and mapping ecosystem services as well as their application in decision-making.
