ESP’s first conference in the MENA region
ESP organised its first conference for the MENA (Middle East & North Africa) region together with GIZ (German Society for International Cooperation). The conference took place from 22-25 April 2018 at the Dead Sea, Jordan, and had the theme ‘Enhancing ecosystem services through ecological restoration for nature and people’.
The conference focused on the specific environmental challenges faced by countries in the MENA region, promoting the idea that ecosystem services are not lost forever once an area and/or landscape element are degraded heavily, but that restoration measures and rehabilitation programmes can successfully revive ecosystem services.
Over a 100 participants from 11 different countries took part in the first ESP MENA conference, joining parallel sessions on different topics, including: sustainable rangeland management, tourism and ES, crop wild relatives (CWR), native seed preservation, ES assessment frameworks and typologies, ES supply-demand gaps, science-business collaboration and more. The participants also joined a field trip to Yarmouk Nature Reserve where they could witness first-hand a sustainable rangeland management initiative.
