Two events on scientific publishing were jointly organised by the Bulgarian Geographical Society (BGS) and Young ES Specialists (YESS), during this year’s edition of GeoNight2024 in Sofia, Bulgaria. The first was a workshop on Best practices in publication process, and the second was an event for early career researchers titled Tips and tricks for newcomers to the publishing process.
“Best practices in publication process” – 5 April 2024
The first event was held in person on the 5th of April at the Faculty of Geology and Geography (Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski). The event was organised as a workshop for Bulgarian scholars to learn practical skills and best practices in scientific publication titled “Best practices in publication process”. It gathered PhD students, early career researchers (ECR), postdocs, and scientists who are newcomers to publishing in internationally indexed journals. Trainers were BGS and ESP members with an editorial experience in reputable journals across the world.
“Tips and tricks for newcomers to the publishing process” – 12 April 2024
The second GeoNight event, “Tips and tricks for newcomers to the publishing process” (12th of April) was co-organized by the BGS and YESS. The event was specially developed for ECRs from YESS and SELINA project ECR network with expertise in Earth Sciences and relevant ecological disciplines. It was held online and gathered nearly 30 participants from Germany, Italy, Nigeria, North Macedonia, Norway, Spain, Tanzania, Turkey, Thailand, and Bulgaria.
Speakers and trainers Stoyan Nedkov (NIGGG-BAS), Graciela Rusch (NINA), Jarumi Kato Huerta (University of Trento), Iva Boyadzhieva (Pensoft Publishers), Vanya Stoycheva (NIGGG-BAS), and Hristina Prodanova (NIGGG-BAS) shared their experiences in quality publishing, providing tips and tricks for ECRs and newcomers to the international publishing process, from the perspective of academia and the publishing industry. Discussions and demonstrations were focused on the process of writing the manuscript; creating good-looking and appropriate scientific figures; and communication activities of the published papers.
