Title: Ecosystem Services Science, Policy and Practice in Asia: examples of applications in planning, management and decision making
Responding to calls from Asian researchers and practitioners during various ESP-conferences on ecosystem services (a.o. the ESP-Asia Forum during the 10th ESP World Conference, Oct. 2019), this special issue aims to provide examples of relevant contributions to ecosystem-based policy-making, to find innovative solutions from case studies, and to stimulate future research activities on actualization of ES approaches in Asia.
The Ecosystem services (ES) approach is one of frequently used policy instruments in Asia with various demonstration projects ranging from analysing ecosystem services of protected areas to innovate payment schemes for ecosystem services to mitigate biodiversity loss and climate change. Policy makers and stakeholders of conservation areas are searching for instruments to demonstrate the value of nature conservation, strengthening public support and distributing nature’s benefits more fairly to enhance sustainability.
Papers should address at least one of the following topics, including empirical cases in Asia :
- How can we effectively institutionalize ES approaches in environmental policy development and participatory governance of nature conservation?
- What kind of ES tools and models are developed to advance current management practices and to solve environmental challenges?
- How can ES approaches enhance interdisciplinary collaboration contributing to nature-based solutions and sustainability at local level?
