ReNature 2nd Interdisciplinary Training School – Planning Nature-based Solutions in Cities

The ReNature project has just launched an open call for participation in the ReNature 2nd Interdisciplinary Training School on Nature-based Solutions. The training school will take place 15-18 March 2021.

The ReNature 2nd Interdisciplinary Training School aims to provide participants with an understanding of the opportunities to mainstream nature-based solutions in urban planning and to design nature-based solutions that provide co-benefits to biodiversity and ecosystem services, leading to an improvement in human well-being. A Practice-Oriented Approach to Foster Private Landowner Participation in ES Conservation and Restoration at a Landscape Scale

A new publication from members of the National Ecosystem Services Partnership (United States) proposes an ecosystem services based approach for dealing with the issues of designing conservation programs that incorporate varying landowner perceptions, values, and ownership objectives.

Abstract
Large landscape conservation planning often requires managers to coordinate with private landowners, especially in regions like the southern and western U.S. where private landownership dominates. It is often difficult to design conservation programs that incorporate varying landowner perceptions, values, and ownership objectives. Simple and transferable methods are needed to inform the design of landscape-scale conservation and restoration programs, and we propose that this can be done by targeting ecosystem services (ES) of interest to private landowners. Unrealised economic opportunities in remote Indigenous communities: Case studies from northern Australia

Building on unique Indigenous advantages for people living in remote areas, this study offers insights for innovative land-based economic opportunities across northern Australia. These advantages—outside the mainstream economics—include peoples’ abilities to manage land and knowledge of ecosystems, culture, traditions/ceremonies which directly contribute towards peoples’ health, social relations, provisioning of a safe and secure environment, and learning constituents of well-being.

A new paper by Sectoral Working Group 9 (Indigineous Peoples and Local Communities) lead Kamaljit Sangha sheds light on the ongoing farmers’ protests in India and provides critical analysis of the current situation.

Abstract
The current crisis in Indian agriculture warrants solutions, but in consultation with farmers and related institutions; unlike the imposition of Farming Reforming Bills passed by the Indian Government on 20-22 September 2020. The three recent Government Farming Reform Acts i.e. Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce; Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act; and Essential Commodities Act, have caused frustration among millions of farmers, farmworkers, and the general public since September 2020, and the government fails to understand farmers’ perspective—agriculture is their heritage, not a business. Call for papers for a special issue with Frontiers, a leading Open Access and Open Science Platform. The focus of this special issue is Water-Gender-Migration: The Complex Nexus and Interlinkages. The special issue is a collaboration between experts from Global South and Global North and institutions of repute, including Ghent University, Cadi Ayyad University (Morocco), and Global Water Partnership and UNU  INWEH.
