In the MARE Conference on People & the Sea IX: Dealing with Maritime Mobilities (Amsterdam, NL – 5-7 July 2017), the Marine Biome working group of ESP, organized a joint session with the Strategic Initiative on the Human Dimension of the International Council of the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). The session with title “Integrating Ecosystem Service Assessments and Fisheries Management – How to modify current fisheries advice taking ecosystem services into account” was chaired by Evangelia Drakou (ITC, NL), Jörn Schmidt (Uni Kiel, DE) and Camino Liquete (DG ENV).
The objective of this joint session was to bring the two scientific communities together to move new concepts on marine ecosystem services forward, but also to make sure that the ecosystem services concept is more used within the community of practice for fisheries management (represented by ICES).
Speakers representing the marine ecosystem services and the fisheries management scientific communities were invited to present their view of things. The presentations were followed by a 1-hour long discussion in which conceptual and methodological challenges and opportunities of bringing together these two words were identified. Details on the content of the talks can be given upon request.
