Department description
Working for the RIVM Centre for Sustainability, Environment and and Health
The Centre for Sustainability, Environment and Health (DMG) works for the sustainability of our society so that sustainable use can be made of our environment now and in the future. This involves us using our knowledge and expertise on the impact of environmental quality on the health and well-being of people and ecosystems. The Environmental Effects & Ecosystems department researches and advises on the effects that human actions have on natural capital. When doing so the priority is to make this knowledge accessible and to apply it in practice at national and local level, as well as to integrate knowledge from other parts of RIVM in relation to health effects. Stakeholder participation is an important theme in connection with creating a basis of support, while an additional focus is on risk perception and communication and their application in practice.
Job description
You will develop and integrate a package of spatial (dynamic) models in order to gain an insight into the benefits of various ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, water storage, pollination or recreation, and will apply these models in the urban and rural setting. You will supervise the development of (spatial) planning tools for natural capital. In addition, you will help coordinate information and methods within the Netherlands and at European level. You will write recommendations and reports for government bodies and you will publish your work in popular, specialist and scientific journals. Presentation of your work at congresses and symposia will also be part of your job. You will maintain contacts with commissioning parties and will cooperate intensively with other centres within the environment and safety domain and elsewhere, as well as with other institutes. You will work independently and as a member of various different teams. You are enterprising and, together with others, will acquire new assignments which are socially relevant and fit the RIVM profile.
Job requirements
• You have a relevant scientific degree in, for example, environmental science or geosciences.
• You have knowledge of natural capital and experience with the spatial modelling of ecosystem services.
• You have demonstrable experience with GIS, preferably PCRaster, Python and Git.
• You preferably have experience with economic valuation methods.
• You are proficient with all standard office software.
• You are a versatile natural scientist who can communicate well both with colleagues, including colleagues from other disciplines, and with commissioning parties. Experience with developing and maintaining contacts with commissioning parties is a plus.
• You preferably have several years work experience.
• You can function well both independently and as a member of a team.
Terms and conditions of employment
In addition to your salary and holiday pay you will receive an end-of-year bonus, referred to as the 13th month. The national government is keen to promote personal growth and career development and offers plenty of opportunities to do so. The fringe benefits include a maximum of 55% paid parental leave (subject to certain conditions), study facilities, an extra leave scheme for elderly people and a commuting allowance. You will also have a number of individual options which you can choose when putting together your employment conditions package.
