One key objective of the ESP sectoral working on water (SWG 5–Ecosystem Services in Water Management) is to support the implementation and application of the ecosystem services focused projects globally. The co-lead to the working Group – Nidhi Nagabhatla, working with United Nations University – Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU INWEH), along with partners, mainly WaterFuture, recently launched a new initiative 2030 WaterSecure. The curtain raiser of the program was provided at the recently held World Water Forum in Brasilia.
The initiative is designed as a partnership and collaboration model, that aims to develop capacity and address global water crisis through creation of long term and collective vision of building and strengthening capacity of actors, agents, agencies and institutions in realizing the ‘Water Security’ Agenda (the agenda inlcude clear focus on ecosystem approach to water management). It is anticipated that through wider adoption of the water security understanding and the conceptual framework – this global scale initiative can assist stakeholders tackle water challenges and enable efficient implementation of 2030 water-related goals and targets – through strengthened capacity and by bonding the up-to-date data, information and knowledge, state-of-the-art science, technology, and assessment tools to draft tailored communication methods, and products for specific user needs.
It is envisioned that developing the capacity of water professionals, mainly youth can go a long way towards addressing the science-policy interactions in the water sector and towards better future planning, adopting and implementing of reforms towards a vision of sustainable water futures. The idea is to create self-sufficient, in-country capabilities to monitor, assess and apply water-related sustainable development goals interventions 2030WaterSecure- will closely link with ‘Water Security and Nexus’ project – a global program that supports decision makers and development community in applying water security agenda and the UN-Water Learning Center – an e-Learning platform that supports training and building knowledge and skills of professionals in developing countries, executed via a regional network of training institutions and universities.
