(English version below)

The international training on “Integrated Ecosystem Services Assessment ” was held in collaboration between Dr. Herlin Chien from the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology and the international organization, The Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP), from May 15th to 17th, 2023, at the Department of Geography, National Taiwan University. The training brought together students, professors, and experts from various universities in Taiwan and institutions such as the Academia Sinica, Agricultural Research Institute, Forestry Research Institute, Taiwan Sustainability Hub, Taiwan Environmental Planning Association, and Taiwan Wild Bird Conservation Association. It also attracted international Professionals from countries such as Denmark, the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, South Korea, and Nigeria. The objective of this training was to collectively explore, assess, and enhance the value of “natural resources” and their services.
ESP Chair Rudolf de Groot and Namue Lee, a director of the ESP Asia regional office, co-chaired the training. Participants actively engaged in group exercises to analyze, compare, and jointly evaluate ecosystem services’ value according to the 9-step integrated ecosystem services assessment framework. As one of the co-organisers, the Department of Geography at National Taiwan University shared their research findings in the Pinglin area as a case study. Through three different scenario-building of the Pinglin area, they explored diverse methods for assessing the value of natural resources, aiming to find nature-based solutions among conventional agricultural practices, low-impact farming and organic farming. The training provided opportunities to share diverse professional experiences and research outcomes among participants and to develop ecosystem services approaches for effective nature management and related institutional change. Discussions focused on incorporating ecosystem services into policy strategies and decision-making processes to promote sustainable development and environmental protection.
