WWF-UK wishes to appoint a consultant or consortium to undertake a scoping study to identify options for modelling the potential global socio-economic impacts of future changes in biodiversity and ecosystem services. This scoping study is a key part of Phase 1 of a new project initiated by WWF, the overall aim of which is to help strengthen the evidence base on the potential global socio-economic impacts of future changes in biodiversity and ecosystem services. Bioengineering, stakeholder participation and ecosystem services valuation protect salt marshes in the lagoon of Venice

In the past 100 years 72% of the salt marshes of the lagoon of Venice was lost due to erosion. The EU LIFE VIMINE project successfully reduced erosion by creating biodegradable barriers of wooden fascines. Long-term protection is secured by involving local communities in protection works and ecotourism. Local society now realises that the benefits of salt marsh protection outweigh its costs.
